Abstract

One of the pinnacles of nineteenth-century pianism, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition broke new frontiers in writing for the piano through its use of ringing bell-like sonorities, dramatic juxtaposition of registers and dynamics, its approach to resonance, percussive octaves and rapid hand-alternations, as well as in its sheer grandeur of sound. This short essay explores the indebtedness of the French composers Ravel and Messiaen to their Russian predecessor with particular reference to the pianism and musical structure of Miroirs and Cantéyodjayâ.
