Abstract

Rationale. The objective of this workshop would be to explore the ‘Active engagement model’ of reflection. This model has been devised by Delaney et al (2010) in Melbourne, Australia and provides an ethical dimension to reflective practice within the healthcare context. There are 3 stages to this model that build upon the therapeutic relationship. Firstly, the skill of active listening, followed by reflexive thinking. Finally, critical reasoning where analysis of ethical theories, sociocultural influences and factors influencing contexts and patients are considered. The consideration of Beneficence, Non maleficence, Justice and Autonomy will be explored within this ethical framework. Audience. It has most relevance to complex management or vulnerable groups of patients but could be applied in more straightforward care. It would benefit healthcare practitioners at various stages of their career. For those just setting out it will help them explore ethical issues for the first time or enable those with experience to reflect on a deeper level. It will provide a safe environment to discuss the ethical /moral dilemmas that can emerge from practice where there are not always clear resolutions. It will build on their self awareness of ethical issues. Content. The ‘Active engagement model’ will be outlined and delegates encouraged to participate in a personal activity relevant to their context. A discussion around ethical dilemmas for healthcare practitioners will be facilitated as issues arise from those pertinent to the audience. Delivery method(s). An initial power point presentation, followed by a personal writing activity. A group discussion will be facilitated around the ethical dilemmas raised by the audience. This will provide a different framework for them to add to their existing reflective practice skills.
