Abstract

Results are presented for observations of two molecular-outflow sources, the dark cloud L1551 and the late-type variable star IRC+10216, in the J = 3 - 2 transition of CO (345 GHz) and in the far-IR at wavelengths of 377, 811, and 1136 microns. It is found that strong velocity gradients are present in the CO emission zones of L1551, implying small optical depths and relatively high densities, and that the central source (IRS 5) exhibits an IR excess that is not explainable in terms of a single-temperature continuum. The far-IR continuum of IRC+10216 is synthesized by assuming a particular distribution of optically thin grains. The CO J = 3 - 2 spectrum of the star is shown to imply a variable mass-loss rate.
