Abstract

Partial arcing of external insulation in polluted environments is substantially reduced for composite structures with polymeric housings compared with ceramic insulators and bushings. However, loss of surface hydrophobicity combined with heavy deposits of saline or other conductive compounds negate this advantage and risk tracking or erosion. It is shown that mitigation of this risk is provided by moulded surface textures that increase the form factor and effective creepage distance of the insulation. Inclined-plane and fog testing are used to quantify the reduction of leakage-current and power dissipation.
