Abstract

Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIGs) interfaced to the power system through power electronics devices are being undergone a rapidly increasing penetration. The DFIG in its normal operating mode does not emulate inertial response which has imposed difficulty in the grid frequency control. This paper proposed a novel inertial emulation scheme for DFIG which can provide dynamic short term active power support in proportion to rate of change of frequency (ROCOF). The case study revealed that the transient frequency support through an inertial response loop together with the permanent support through a droop characteristic for DFIG successfully prevents the grid frequency decline with similar characteristics as that brought by the conventional synchronous generator (SG) based distributed generations. The studies were performed on a 33-node isolated distribution network to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
