Abstract

Abstract: Key debates in cyber and physical security concerns resilience, yet, are we certain we know exactly what we mean when we think of resilience? Is resilience (cyber and physical) managed in an integrated and coherent way across the separate parts of an organization? This article suggests that the separate elements comprising resilience both cyber and physical still suffers from a lack of a conceptual clarity, inconsistent definitions and a shifting landscape of approaches for analysis, measurement and management. The discussion that follows seeks to address current limitations in resilience by examining thinking in resilience across a number of different disciplines as well as providing an overview of some of the tensions between ‘experts’, industry and the academy. The article also argues that, as a result of inconsistencies in thinking, different practices have emerged. In conclusion, the article suggests that practitioners may decide that a reconfiguration of resilience is necessary and that a conceptual clarity may provide practical support to assist practitioners, industry, policy makers and academics.
