Abstract

Background. Qualitative research makes an important contribution to midwifery knowledge. This paper is based on a keynote presentation that was given at the launch of the Doctoral Midwifery Research Society. Aim. To assist midwifery researchers in conducting qualitative research by sharing experiential knowledge. Method. A professor of midwifery gives her reflections on conducting qualitative research, identifying significant features that contribute toward its particular value. Results. Four features were identified as being significant – the value of unexpected findings, putting preconceptions aside, gaining insight from everyday events and the primacy of relationships. Conclusions. Qualitative research has a particular place and significance in midwifery research, due to the complexity of the issues and the importance of relationships in providing care for pregnant women, new mothers and infants. Qualitative researchers need to be mindful of the significance of the unexpected, and to keep alert to what may be special within the familiar and the everyday.
