Abstract

This paper describes the work of the Welsh Association of Midwifery Lecturers in their aim to develop a framework of 'composite skills' descriptors to teach and assess practical midwifery skills. Following the UKCC Fitness for Practice report (1999) the All Wales Initiative was set up and the Association was formed from this. Their first aim was to devise a framework tool that would combine theory with practice, as part of the Fitness for Practice aim of midwifery competence. It was developed specifically to enhance the learning opportunities for students, while proving useful in everyday practice. Potentially, the tool will be applicable to the development of the grading of practice for degree programmes.
