Abstract

Submillimeter and millimeter continuum observations of the starburst galaxy M82 are presented. The thermal dust distribution in the central 1 kpc and halo of the galaxy at both 800 and 1100 microns has been mapped. These data show an elongated nucleus, with a peak position consistent with the putative 2.2-micron stellar nucleus, and a halo of dust grains extending to distances of 500 pc from the plane of the galaxy. A sufficient number of grains can be produced in the circumstellar shells of the giant star population to account for the mass of dust observed in M82. In the higher resolution (14 arcsec) 800-micron map, there is evidence to suggest that the outflowing grains are confined within the plane of galaxy by the molecular ring detected in CO. The close similarity between the spatial extents of relativistic electrons, magnetic fields and dust grains strongly suggests that inverse Compton scattering dominates the production of the observed X-ray luminosity.
