Abstract

This chapter offers an Anglican perspective on the theology of ordination. It considers the relationship between the priesthood of Christ, that of the Church and that of the ordained in Anglican thinking in the twentieth century. It argues for a shift in the understanding of ordained priesthood within that period, especially in the relationship between the priesthood of the ordained and that of the Church. The chapter contrasts an earlier understanding of the ordained as set apart from the laity in a representational role, with the contemporary view that the ordained are set apart within the ecclesial community as a focus for the priesthood of the whole body.
