Abstract

This aim of this dissertation has been to decipher the primary reasons for nonconcordance to HAART, by commencing a literature review to identify themes and patterns of non-concordance. It was found that the reasons for non-concordance were complex, however they could be separated into three distinct categories, these were: Physical issues with HAART, Psychosocial issues affecting treatment, such as perceived stigma and depression and finally information factors such the level of understanding of the HIV pathogen. There were also a number of interventions suggested in the literature to support concordance to HAART, though there was variance in their utility. It was revealed that nurses are well placed to aid patients in maintaining concordance, and that by extrapolating the issues of HAART concordance to a sociological model it would be easier for nurses working in areas where it is less common to encounter patients with HIV to evaluate concordance and help patients to increase their concordance when necessary. The most concordant patients were those who took responsibility for managing their conditions. Nurses can help patients take charge of their health. The importance of this is reflected in the latest national strategy for managing HIV and AIDS.
