Abstract

In the present paper I explore the interaction of Rāma with Jābāli in the Rāmāyaṇa. I show that the encounter is one that offers key insights into the role of literary dialogue in the staging of religious debate in early South Asia. I also argue that the exploration of the ways in which kings and sages are represented in dialogue contributes, albeit speculatively, to the history of the constitution and re-constitution of the religious and political status quo in successive periods of early Indian history.
