Abstract

Preventing heritage objects from being damaged by pests is a major challenge of collection care. Integrated pest management (IPM) programmes are currently the preferred option within the heritage sector for protecting collections from insect pests. One essential feature of IPM is monitoring and recording, resulting in large amounts of data processing. While there is a considerable body of literature on the identification of common pests and the implementation and maintenance of an IPM programme, including the collection of pest activity data, little guidance exists on how to communicate these data most effectively. This paper reviews current, and suggests future, solutions for data visualisation and advocates for more effective communication by adopting novel graphical representations. By offering options which are dynamic, visually attractive and meaningful, such as Dorling cartograms and Malthusian growth pyramids, the authors propose new tools to enhance IPM data communication in a previously under-researched aspect.
