Abstract

The Lydians occupied a central area of western Anatolia and although their origins are unknown, attested only in Greek mythical texts, in the 7th and 6th centuries bce evidence becomes more plentiful for Lydian expansion throughout much of Asia Minor. The leadership of aggressive military rulers such as Alyattes and Croesus quickly expanded Lydia's sphere of influence, making its capital, Sardis, one of the wealthiest and most beautiful cities of Antiquity.
