Abstract
The North Ibis Catacomb at North Saqqara is one of two ibis burial places within the ancient necropolis. The site was probably visited by early travellers to Saqqara but was then lost and was not rediscovered until the final season of work by the late Professor W.B. Emery in 1970-71. At that time a preliminary survey was made by the late K.J. Frazer but the site was not further investigated because of its poor condition and Emery’s untimely death. In the 1990s the site was re-surveyed by P.T. Nicholson and C.M. Jackson but awaits full publication. This paper offers some preliminary views on the site and its function. This paper is dedicated to my friend and colleague Dr. Nick R.J. Fieller (1947–2017) whose contribution to the work at the animal necropolis has been a great benefit to its study and who died whilst this paper was in preparation.
