Abstract

This report was undertaken as part of work package 1 (WP1) for the Institute of Welsh Affairs’ (IWA) ‘Re-energising Wales’ project (2016 to 2019.) The aims of the project are to provide a fact based plan to enable Wales to meet its projected energy demands entirely from renewable sources by 2035 and beyond. This will then achieve the targeted 80% reduction in energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, based on 1990 emission figures. To understand how the Welsh energy supply system should evolve to most effectively and efficiently meet these aims, we first have to understand when, where and why we use the energy currently consumed. The work covered by this report has produced estimates of the energy demand of Welsh domestic and non-domestic buildings in half-hourly intervals for each of the 10,048 Census 2011 Output Areas (OA) in Wales (Office for National Statistics, 2011). A bottom-up approach is used to assess the annual building energy demand for every building in Wales that appeared in the Ordnance Survey data for Wales in April 2017 (Ordnance Survey, 2017).
