Abstract
Place and landscape are increasingly important intersecting concepts within musicology, and this paper will make reference to both in relation to the Orkney-inspired music that Peter Maxwell Davies composed between 1971 and 2016. The geography, environment, history, politics, people, language, literature and native music of Orkney – the terroir of the Islands – profoundly affected the production of a vast array of Davies’s works during this period. A number of these compositions will be selected for discussion in relation to several basic topics or categories. The paper will also consider Davies’s spoken and written words, such as his essay ‘Pax Orcadiensis’, written in the mid-1970s. This details his move to Hoy, his close association with the Orcadian writer and poet, George Mackay Brown, and the intense impact that Orkney’s landscape and seascape had on Davies’s compositional philosophy and resulting music.
