I'm not sure what i want (and I don't know how to get it): how do social care workers perceive the parental relationships of children with autistic spectrum conditions? Abstract
This paper explores social care workers' perceptions of the relationships between children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions and their carers. Using attachment theory as a framework, I have attempted to show how children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions present a unique challenge to social workers' understandings of how early attachment and bonding experiences manifest themselves. Basing my conclusions upon interviews with five social care workers in the field of disability, this paper argues that the attachments between children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions and their carers are often complex, confused and challenging but ultimately of the same vital important in their lives as they are for non-disabled children. For the purposes of this paper, the social care workers in the study are referred to by fictitious initials and the children by fictitious names
