Abstract

Ground Potential Rise (GPR) evaluation under fault conditions is important for the evaluation of electric safety for human beings in electric networks. Current national and international standards recommend this evaluation based on a set of worst-case conditions and adopt a simplified fault current distribution calculation procedure. Such an approach may lead to considerable over-design of grounding systems. To address these issues, and move towards a comprehensive probabilistic evaluation of risk, a more detailed model of the electric network is required. This paper describes the application of the multi-conductor modelling approach to a transmission network. The method is applied to a portion of the UK transmission network and the fault current and its distribution among the phases, earth wire and ground is evaluated for three example fault positions. It is found from these preliminary studies that important intricacies of the network model such as the position of the fault along the line and the substation bus section status affect greatly the fault current distribution while the overall fault current magnitude remains substantially the same for the same loading and generation assumption.
