Abstract

The authors intend this introduction to explain (1) “Studies of Expertise and Experience” (SEE) to readers not familiar with the movement and its goals and (2) the structure of the book. The introduction emphasizes the importance of defining and standardizing scientific expertise in legal and political settings, introduces the concept of interactional expertise as experience based and just as credible as the views of highly credentialed experts, and explains how the Imitation Games demonstrate the acquisition of interactional expertise by those pretending to be something that they are not through “interaction” with an expert community.
