Abstract

A portable quadrupole mass spectrometer, fitted with a 1 mm internal diameter stainless-steel probe with a silicone membrane-covered tip, has been used to study gas production in an artificial rumen (RUSITEC), and to monitor the effects of exposing the rumen contents to atmospheric oxygen. It was found that, while oxygen did not rise detectably in the liquid phase, the production of carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen were all affected by its presence, taking over 6h to recover to a new steady state after replacement of the feed bags in the simulator. The mass spectrometer was also used to monitor the metabolic effects of various feed components supplied to RUSITEC instead of the normal feed bag changes.
