Abstract

Of all the episodes in the history of the Near East at the time of the Crusades, handing over Jerusalem to the Christians by the Treaty of Jaffa in 1229 must rank as one of the most extraordinary. Even although the Ḥaram al-Sharīf was reserved exclusively for Muslim use, the idea that a city so revered throughout Islam should be alienated to unbelievers, and without a blow being struck, caused outrage in the Muslim world.
