Abstract

In his idiosyncratic works - not least in the "Lulu" dramas - Frank Wedekind (1864-1918) dealt with the often shocking and enigmatic material of Wedekind's family history throughout his life. After the death of his father Wilhelm (1816-1888), who had emigrated to San Francisco as a result of the failed March Revolution of 1848/49, Frank Wedekind discovered his »Californian diary«, which was written in French. In it, Wilhelm Wedekind, considered a gentleman and a decent doctor, appears as an aging bachelor and a hopelessly comical figure in court for the singer Emilie Kammerer, a young and life-hungry woman who frequented the wicked artistic circles of California. From the marriage of 1863, which Emilie agreed to after several catastrophic incidents in her life, five other siblings emerged in addition to Frank. Frank Wedekind's translation of the diary into German is now available together with the original French text. By opening up many new sources, Stephen Parker sheds light on the darkness of their relationship that the Wedekind parents wanted. In his introductory essay, Parker tells the story of the Wedekinds in America, which is more saturated with reality and more dissonant than the long-cherished family legends.
