Abstract

In the context of the COVID19 pandemic, the School of Modern Languages in Cardiff University decided to adopt a blended learning approach to language teaching, combining some face-to-face, synchronous and asynchronous teaching activities. This approach was implemented in the Spanish language modules and the Year 2 Spanish Language in particular, where the grammar, conversation and translation elements had to be redefined to cater for the new needs of our students in the new university context. The translation into Spanish element has been one of the most challenging elements to incorporate into the new language programme structure as it has been implemented in the language course as an asynchronous activity. The use of discussion boards is playing a critical role in the delivery and the monitorisation of the translation into Spanish tasks for teachers as well as in the way in which assessment activities are presented to students. In this workshop, we will explore how the use of discussion boards can serve a dual purpose: Firstly, to assist language teachers in the delivery of translation into foreign language activities and secondly, to engage students with assessment in the virtual learning environment.
