O'Donnell, Aidan 2009. The bells are the voice of God: diegetic music in post-war Italian cinema. Harper, Graeme, Doughty, Ruth and Eisentraut, Jochen, eds. Sound and music in film and visual media, London: Continuum, pp. 340-351. |
Abstract
From the early days of Italy's cinema up to contemporary directors, diegetic music has been a rich expressive and narrative resource. Placing the music in the film, rather than outside or alongside as score, gives it a richer role that is often more closely tied to developing the film's ideas and story.
