Abstract
Summary: There are many health inequalities among the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer plus (LGBTQ+) community. It is well documented that LGBTQ+ people have worse health outcomes than their cis gender, heterosexual counterparts.1 The mental, physical and health inequalities of this community are discussed. Along with lifestyle factors and issues faced by LGBTQ+ people within healthcare settings. The different health issues facing each group within the LGBTQ+ community are identified and discussed to show how different issues face different groups. Relevance: As future doctors you will have patients who identify as LGBTQ+ and it will be relevant to understand some of the issues they face to treat them with compassion and understanding. You cannot be taught everything but reading this will aid in your knowledge and understanding of a community you may not be a part of but be required to help. Take home messages: • There are major health inequalities among the LGBTQ+ community and LGBTQ+ people continually face negativity and discrimination within healthcare settings. • While grouped as a single entity, LGBTQ+ is made up of many separate groups, each with their own distinct needs and specific health issues. • An LGBTQ+ person having mental health issues is not because they LGBTQ+, but due to how people and society have made us feel for being LGBTQ+. • There are many LGBTQ+ charities available to support their community for various illnesses and conditions so learn what services are available in the area you work.
