Abstract

This article responds to Loveday Alexander's chapter, 'The Gospel According to Celsus: Celsus' Representation of Christianity', on pp. 254-287 of this volume. It covers mainly the two main sections of the chapter, 1) Celsus' representation of Christianity as a social phenomenon, and 2) Celsus' discussion of Christianity's teachings, myths and beliefs. It concludes - by and large agreeing with Alexander - that although Celsus' work is strongly polemical and takes ultimately a negative view of Christianity, it nevertheless is constructive in its criticism and betrays a positive theological agenda of its own.
