Abstract

The constant in Elke Erb’s short prose and poetry is the surrealist principle of dislocation. In particular in the late-1980s, this unsettled the reader’s certainty about the work’s location, oscillating between different realities. This is most evident in the poem ‘Das Unternehmen Schreiben’ in her volume Winkelzüge of 1987. Following in the footsteps of Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Ingeborg Bachmann, Frederike Mayröcker and of some French Surrealist writers, Erb rejoices in a surrealistic mode of writing. She extended her decision to initiate an experimental poetics, for example the so-called procedural writing in the second half of the 1980s in the volume Kastanienallee (her coup-de-grace), that inevitably continued in influencing a young generation of poets in the GDR.
