Abstract

This paper uses a preventive conservation training programme delivered in Myanmar as a case study to explore some universal aspects of preventive conservation and to discuss what benefits can be achieved when‘east meets west over an insect trap and data logger’. The cooperative preventive conservation development programme describes the role of Myanmar and British experts and the compromise between what was needed and what could be resourced. The paper explores how such an exchange exposes the essential nature of preventive conservation and those who enact it, working between languages, cultures and resources. Preventive conservation decisions stem from a sense of value and purpose set in a cultural context which has an impact on the collections care approach chosen.
