Abstract
The contribution of this paper is twofold. It offers critical theoretical discussion on the applicability, value, and limitations of comparative historical approach in the realm of German-German contemporary church history. Its empirical relevance lies in the analysis of the public controversy on both sides of German border provoked by the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. This international event compelled the German Protestant church leaders to reflect critically on the Nazi past and churches’ role in the Third Reich. The chapter reveals some significant discrepancies in the East and West German churches’ responses to the trial and interprets them in light of German-German identity conflict and considering the ‘church struggle’ legacy of the Third Reich.
