Abstract
This paper provides a detailed study of the ability of balanced power amplifiers to maintain reasonable performance under output load mismatch when compared to single-stage or parallel-combined power amplifiers. In particular, it shows how the classical device approximation as a voltage controlled current source provides misleading results, especially when approaching saturation. On the other hand, a simple device model based on a static polynomial approximation of the output current vs. voltage characteristics is sufficient to capture a realistic response of the amplifier, verified against a full non-linear model of a GaN high electron mobility transistor.
