Abstract
This introductory chapter sets the stage for the volume as a whole, providing an overview of the nature of linguistic investigation and methodological issues which are addressed by the collection of contributions. In addition to providing the motivation and impetus for both the volume and the series in which it appears, the chapter focusses on summarising the challenges addressed by the research in the volume and the ways in which evidence arising from a range of data sources can shift our interpretation of theoretical assumptions.
