Abstract

This chapter concerns creative practice research that emerged from the bureaucratic exchanges of progress and value engineering meetings that occurred during the conduct of a live architectural project. As a participant-observer, the author reflected upon his experience through an auto-ethnographic reflective-practice exercise that considered the practical values and preconceptions informing everyday actions within practice. Combining methods of storytelling, design fiction, and cartoon, the exercise was translated into a graphic novel that dramatised the varied disciplinary positions to professional situations of the building production process, highlighting the changing role and status of architects within the construction industry. The imaginary city of Practiceopolis thus became envisaged through a sequence of iterative narratives critically rethinking the dominating values of the contemporary architectural profession and its relation with the wider building industry. This chapter offers how the graphic novel as research instrument allows for such interrogation of practice—reflexively and reflectively—in order to extract wider lessons. It thereby elaborates upon the genre of the graphic novel as a potential method for communicating creative-practice research, one that may bring down some of the barriers that obstruct such research from being accessible and transferable.
