Abstract

It has been proposed that Neural Cell Transplantation (NCT) could be developed as potential therapy for Huntington’s Disease (HD) and clinical trials are due to be undertaken in the near future. Recruitment into these clinical trials is set to be undertaken from the population of people with prodromal or early stage HD. Research undertaken to date has primarily concentrated on procedural safety and the understanding, perceptions and feelings of potential recipients have not yet been explored. The primary aim of this thesis was to explore the perceptions and understanding of NCT amongst people with prodromal HD in order that that their beliefs, concerns and perspectives could become clear to health service decision makers and clinical teams. Ensuring that the voices of potential clinical trial participants are heard is critical to facilitate the development of person-centred activities and guidelines with respects implementation of NCT. Method: Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) in order to give voice to the people who might be asked to participate in future clinical trials of NCT. The interviews were analysed descriptively, conceptually and linguistically as is consistent with the philosophical underpinnings of IPA. Cross case patterns were identified and explored. In order to undertake deeper analysis the interviews were interpreted using a theoretical framework Findings: Emerging….due very soon
