Abstract

The energy system is undergoing a radical transition to a sustainable future globally. Integrated energy systems (IES) are considered as a promising way to achieve a more secure, reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy future. This chapter firstly introduces the background, concept evolvement, and definition of IES. Then, four aspects of IES features are described, i.e., decentralized and multi-directional features, multi-vector integration, cyber-physical integration, and multi-scale integration. Next, the associated benefits of IES are categorized into five aspects, i.e., emission reduction, efficiency improvement, flexibility increase, reliability increase, and market innovation. At last, future challenges and opportunities of IES development are further discussed from technical, economic, environmental, and social perspectives. Overall, this chapter presents an overview of IES systematically.
