Abstract

trans-[PtCl2(CnH2n+1OC6H4CH[double bond, length half m-dash]CHC5H4N)(η2-CH2[double bond, length half m-dash]CHCmH2m+1)](2) form stable smectic A mesophases on heating (for n[gt-or-equal]7, m[gt-or-equal]7; n[gt-or-equal]8, m[gt-or-equal]5; n[gt-or-equal]9, m[gt-or-equal]2; and n[gt-or-equal]11, m[gt-or-equal]0); melting temperatures below 50 °C can easily be achieved.
