Abstract

This article discusses certain aspects of the Buddha biography Fo benxing ji jing (aka Abhinishkramana-sutra or 'The Romantic Legend') translated into Chinese by Dhyānagupta’s (aka Jñānagupta) in the second half of the 6th century. It is argued that the text reflects regional features of Gandharan origin. A new attempt to reconstruct the Indic form of the translator's name is undertaken in the light of the the translator's Gandharan origin.
