Abstract
Urban design has been made, unmade, and remade at the intersections of multiple disciplines and professions. Following a brief overview of urban design as an evolving field, this chapter outlines the aims and scope of the handbook. It further discusses how the handbook has been structured in relation to some key research topics and questions in the field of urban design regarding the issues of agency (e.g., how urban space is designed, developed, and managed, and by whom and for whom?), affordance (e.g., how urban space enables or constrains different forms of action?), place (e.g., how are meanings and identities constructed and communicated through urban design?), informality (e.g., how can urban design engage with processes of formalisation and informalisation in cities of the global South and those of the global North?), and performance (e.g., how can the quality and performance of urban design be analysed?). This chapter concludes by discussing research in the field of urban design, outlining some of the key characteristics and/or tendencies of urban design research, and how the emerging recognition of the value of research in the context of urban design education, practice, knowledge, and theory can be considered as an incremental move towards a “research turn” in the field of urban design.
