Abstract
Forms of informality have become integral to how places are being made, unmade and remade, particularly in the context of what is considered as the global South. In this chapter, I discuss my research, which has primarily engaged with the challenge of understanding the dynamics of informal urbanism in relation to urban design and how forms of urban informality work in a global context. With a focus on research design and methods, I primarily reflect on my research on forms of informal settlement, briefly discuss my research on forms of informality, including street vending, in public space, and touch upon the importance of exploring different forms of informality in relation to each other. I further conclude by outlining some of the key research limitations, ethical considerations and future research directions.
