Abstract

This report reflects on the progression, development, and delivery of the Hands on Heritage project after June 2019 in relation to the recommendations of the initial 2018-2019 study. The study had two key objectives. Objective 1: Collate and report relevant data and literature about the impact of COVID-19 on the heritage sector. Objective 2: Conduct an in-depth qualitative research study with young people, museum staff and representatives from museum partner organisations. Provide an insight into these stakeholders’ experience of being involved with Hands on Heritage and their opinions on what could be done to improve the model and encourage engagement with and ownership of the heritage sector more widely. Assess the data generated in relation to the recommendations of the initial 2018-2019 study as well as exploring the impacts of Coronavirus pandemic. The research study was guided by the following central research questions: • How has Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales responded to the recommendations of the 2018-2019 study? • What limitations, opportunities and learning points were generated during the restrictions of the Coronavirus pandemic? • How can the design of projects and activities be developed to create more participatory opportunities and spaces in Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales? • What further policies and strategies need to be in place at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales to build sustainable relationships with young people and partner organisations? To meet these objectives the research followed a two-phase design. In relation to objective one, literature was collated through a rapid review. The review provided information on the current knowledge base in relation the impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic on young people and their involvement with the heritage sector. In relation to objective two, an in-depth qualitative research study was conducted, which involved interviews with young people (n=3), museum staff (n=12) and partner organisations (n=2) and an analysis of reports and resources concerning the activities of Hands on Heritage after June 2019. This qualitative element of the research sought to address the central research questions.
