Elliott, Mark ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0132-0818 2023. Building Skills in Organic Chemistry: Pi-Bonds and Problem-Solving. |
Abstract
Organic chemistry gets a lot of bad press! It is widely perceived to be a ‘difficult’ subject to learn – a mythical list of reactions to memorize. This book takes an ‘active’ approach to helping you build the skills you need to become a competent organic chemist. You will encounter the fundamental reactions typical of p-bonded functional groups. You will then see examples of each reaction type, presented in short, focused chapters. There is a lot of signposting to related chemistry, allowing you to build the important connections. The focus is on understanding why things happen, so that you replace ‘learning the reaction’ with ‘being able to predict the outcome’ based on sound mechanistic principles. In this way, you will find there is less to remember, and more to enjoy
