Abstract

Due to the highly insulating nature of most catalytic samples, some form of charge compensation is required to study such samples by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This chapter provides an overview of charge build-up at surfaces and how such phenomena may be overcome, enabling the analyst to obtain meaningful spectral shapes and binding energies from the recorded photoelectron spectra. An overview of the variety of approaches used for charge correction in the literature is presented, with a critical view towards their use in catalytic materials.
