Abstract

While considerable scholarly attention has focused on the rise of illiberalism on the right, there has been much less focus on the left. This oversight has obscured the fact that right-wing illiberalism is closely linked to much of the liberal tradition and its undemocratic past. This chapter traces the similarities between the illiberal right and the liberal center and argues that both have a complicated and at times antithetical relationship with democracy.
