Abstract
Aim To report on undergraduate (UG) student nurses’ learning experience with the Wales Virtual hospital - 360° still environment (WVH- 360°) e-learning package – Care of a child with febrile seizure. Background Recent advances in ‘virtual’ technologies have transformed conventional teaching and learning styles in many ways. The Wales Virtual hospital is an immersive online platform which allows educators to create their own 360° image based clinical environment and scenarios where students can interact with virtual hotspots which contain information, multimedia content, or activities such as reflection, history taking or quiz questions. This was the first project of its kind within UG nursing programme at Cardiff university. Method A storyboard for the WVH- 360° e-learning on the ‘Care of a child with febrile seizure’ was developed by the lead lecturer. The digital learning manager and other key stakeholders have been involved at various stages of the filming and development of the WVH- 360° e-learning package. The final version of the e-learning package was launched in February 2023; an online questionnaire was used to gather information around students’ views on the design, page navigation, contents and learning activities. Students were also asked to comment on what did they like most about the e-learning package and improvements that they would like to see in future WVH- 360° e-learning materials. Findings The WVH- 360° e-learning greatly helped students to improve their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. Most students found the e-learning platform attractive and visually stimulating and appreciated the variety of materials presented in a very organized manner. Conclusion Overall, students’ learning experience with the WVH- 360° e-learning package was positive. The WVH- 360° e-learning package can complement other learning and teaching methods.
