Abstract
The French conquest and colonization of Algeria between 1830 and 1870 marked a pivotal moment in the development of modern French imperialism. Colonial Algeria was the template for a new brand of “liberal” empire that replaced earlier conceptions of Atlantic imperialism in the nineteenth century and a laboratory in which the so-called “idée coloniale” was elaborated. Following the period from the conquest to the consolidation of French power in Algeria, this chapter examines key issues of colonial ideology, settler–native relations, and French administrative tactics as France took the first steps in forging its modern African empire.
