Abstract

Sound recording (first recordings) and sleeve note article (17 pages) of music by Giovanni Battista Casali, maestro di cappella in eighteenth-century Rome. Costanzi Consort conducted by Peter Leech. One of the leading composers, teachers and musical directors in the eternal city during the 1700s, Casali produced hundreds of sacred works for major churches, most of which still languish in archives. This recording sheds light on a composer whose style ranged from imitative polyphony infused with dissonance to lively sacred arias in the galant style.
