Abstract
When Isaiah said that the nations “shall beat their swords into plowshares” (2:4), what political currency did his prophecy have in the ancient Near East? What currency might it have for international relations in our time? These questions prompted a 2005 gathering of scholars in Flor-ence, Italy, and this volume represents the fruits of that gathering, edited by Raymond Cohen and Raymond Westbrook (recently deceased). The book brings together scholars of the ancient Near East with scholars of international politics to reckon with Isaiah’s compelling vision of world peace. While such an interdisciplinary gathering is unique in its own right, more remarkable is the place given to Isaiah as a political thinker in the company of Plato, Confucius, Augustine, and Kant, one worth attending to as a guide for the lives of nations today.
