Abstract

Cytokinesis is the division of a single cell into two (binary fission). Across all kingdoms there is a significant degree of conservation of the cell division process. Cell division is tightly linked to other essential cell processes and spatial arrangement with disfunction commonly leading to loss of viability. Growth and its control is key to pathogenicity. Rapid population expansion allows microbes to overwhelm the immune system, causing infection. Similarly, the ability to limit population expansion in conditions unfavorable to rapid growth allows microbes to evade immune surveillance, increasing persistence. Growth is also a common method of measurement within the laboratory.
