Abstract

Honeycomb carbon has a honeycomb three-dimensional nanoporous structure comprising of graphene nanosheets and has low density, high specific surface area, and high porosity. In addition, it demonstrates numerous unique properties, such as anisotropic thermal conductivity and mechanical properties, gas and liquid ability, and applicability as a composite matrix, and a water desalination membrane. Thus, its unique structure gives honeycomb carbon great application potential in many scientific and engineering fields. Meanwhile, its mechanical and thermal properties play an indispensable role in practical engineering applications. In this review, we discuss the possible crystal structures of the honeycomb carbon. Furthermore, its thermal and mechanical properties reported in the literature are summarized in this review, and the applications of the honeycomb carbon for gas storage and water purification are explored. Finally, the corresponding three-dimensional graphene structure is extended to some degree, and the preparation, properties, and applications of this structure and honeycomb carbon are summarized and prospected.
