Abstract

This paper presents an investigation into the moisture sealing performance of short stroke reciprocating O-rings. A rig has been developed to test strokes of 0 to 10 mm. Moisture leak past the seal is detected by humidity sensor. Tests show that when the stroke is short enough to allow the O-ring surface to maintain ‘stick’ with the reciprocating surface, (i.e. no sliding), the seal will be effective. However as soon as slip occurs, the sliding will transport moisture past the seal. The rate of moisture transport increases with stroke length and cycle frequency.
